The Airevac transportation jet departs for the receiving hospital's airport. During the flight, the flight coordinator tracked the jet's progress on the computer, and call ahead to the receiving ambulance and hospital to alert them.

If there’s bad weather prior to a trip taking place, we will know because as part of our pre trip checkout, we check on current and future weather conditions. If possible, we will plan Life Flight transport plane trip routes that avoid bad weather altogether. We do have the ability to fly over bad weather. If bad weather is going to occur at a landing or takeoff spot, we may delay a trip for the safety of the patient and crew until the weather clears up. If bad weather occurs during the flight, our aircraft are equipped with state of the art radar to avoid weather and we are constantly in contact with coordinators to ensure that our 20 year safety record remains solidly intact.

Air ambulance in reality can be cheaper than charter because if you take a charter flight it’s taxable and the tax of the flight exceeds the cost of the nurses for a medical flight. However, we do incur costs to ensure the safety of your patient that charter does not have One, charter does not include medical personnel; two, charter does not include any type of medical equipment; and the third thing is generally the coordination that is involved as well is not included with a charter. We’re going to coordinate Medevac air medical with both hospital facilities. We’re going to coordinate with ground ambulance companies to be able to pick up your relative and get them to the airport, so all of that extra service is going to be included whereas that would not be the case with the charter.

You can set up your ground transportation yourself if that’s what you prefer to do--certainly. But we’ll be happy to help you with it if you’d like us to. If you set up the grounds, we can provide you with the detailed Medevac Life Flight information about airports, plane information, Terminal information, time schedules, and any logistical information that you will need. We will also ask for contact information so that we can manage the coordination of the ground transportation on the day of the trip to ensure that it goes smoothly for you. As an example, we go at the speed of the patient. If the patient requires more time, we will typically inform the ground transportation of the delay so that they are aware and do not leave the pickup point. We do this as part of our service for you.

We typically outfit the plane services aircraft with two aeromedical specialists on each trip. Depending on our Doctors recommendations for that specific patient, we will send critical care nurses, critical care paramedics, respiratory therapists and doctors. We call the facility to do a medical report. Our Medical Director develops protocols for the trip that are followed by our medical team. From that report, we’ll make the determination of how many medical personnel are necessary to go on the flight. Generally we staff the aircraft with two medical personnel with a critical care nurse and a critical care paramedic, but sometimes the patient requires more or different team make-up.

Commercial airline medical escorts offer a lower cost alternative to flight listing for patients who are medically stable. Patients qualify who are able to sit in a first class seat and who meet commercial airline guidelines. Our flight nurses will provide monitoring equipment, hygienic assistance and all necessary aid, such as administering medication.
